  1. We walked over to my Apple II.  It
  2. really looked good sitting there.
  3. I turned it around and said...

  5. "Now, Ms. Novice, you've got a bird's"
  6. eye view with the keyboard on the left.
  7. And since this is a special Apple II
  8. with a transparent top...
  9. ^
  10. you can actually see the LOGIC BOARD
  11. inside.
  12. ^
  13. "That's really impressive, Mr. Capslock."
  14. It looks pretty complicated.
  15. ^
  16. "Well, it is.  But we'll take it step by"
  17. "step, and you'll catch on in no time."
  18. ^
  19. That's fine.  Go ahead.
  20. ^
  21. "First, notice the DISK DRIVE.  It takes"
  22. information off a floppy disk or puts
  23. information on it.
  24. ^
  25. But the real action goes on here with
  26. "all the INTEGRATED CIRCUITS, called"
  27. chips.  They're silicon wafers with
  28. electronic circuits etched inside.
  29. ^
  30. "And this is the big guy, the boss, the"
  31. MICROPROCESSOR--the brain of the whole
  32. system.
  33. ^
  34. This bunch of chips over here is the
  35. "read-only memory, or ROM for short."
  36. ^
  37. The guys at Apple put information in ROM
  38. "that stays there all the time, whether"
  39. the power is on or off.
  40. ^
  41. What kind of information?
  42. ^
  43. "Oh, things like the Applesoft BASIC"
  44. programming language.  But don't worry.
  45. You don't really need to know much about
  46. ROM.
  47. ^
  48. Last but not least are the chips that
  49. "make up random-access memory, or RAM."
  50. Now RAM is nothing to sneeze at.
  51. ^
  52. Why? What's so great about RAM?
  53. ^
  54. That's where your information was when
  55. you had trouble this morning.  Let me

  58. "When the power is ON, your information"
  59. is in RAM.
  60. ^
  61. "But if the power goes OFF, all the info"
  62. goes away.

  64. "Oh, so I've got to make a permanent"
  65. copy of my work on a disk.

  69. "Yes, I think so.  But I still don't see"
  70. what all this has to do with the
  71. Apple II and me.
